Exploring the outdoors as a family is a fun way to spend time together and promote healthy habits. Rock Hill Parks Recreation & Tourism makes it easy to get outdoors and be active as a family with “How to Outdoors”! Check out our NEW Family Programs specially designed to keep families safe, active, and learning together in an outdoor setting. Whether it’s climbing, hiking, biking, kayaking, or just plain exploring, we have lots of fun planned for you and your family.

Reading With Nature
Reading With Nature is a fun and different way to read a book! Selected nature themed books are put on display page by page along a trail, path in a park, or even a path on a school property. families reading the books will be encouraged to continue on their walk to get to the next page of the book. Each page on display has a prompt to encourage the reader to stop, look around, and take the time to observe the natural world.

Families Exploring Nature 
Do you want to create outdoor experiences with your family but you aren't sure where to go or what to do when you get there? Families Exploring Nature will give you the tools and confidence to take your children outside to explore, appreciate, and have fun in nature. Join us for a hike in the woods and activities that will show you and your children how fun the natural world can be! All you need to bring is water and comfortable walking shoes. Also, feel free to bring a camera to capture the special moments that you will be sure to create with your family. Pre-registration is required.  On-line registration is available at the link above.
Dates:  Check back in Spring 2016 dates.
Location: River Park

Time:  9:30 AM - 11:30 AM 
Cost: $2 per person (All participants must preregister)
Ages:  Families with children ages 4 and up 
 
 
 
Family Kayak Programs 
Kayaking is a fun family activity that gets everyone off the couch and exploring the great outdoors! Lake kayaking is a safe way for beginners of all ages to learn how to paddle and become familiar with the basics of kayaking. We provide all the equipment and instruction for a fun evening on the water.  Pre-registration is required.  On-line registration is available at the link above.
Dates:  Check back for 2016 dates.
Location:  Nivens Creek Landing, Lake Wylie  
  898 Nivens Creek Landing Drive, Tega Cay SC 29708 
Time:  6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Skill Level/Age:  Beginner/4+ 
Cost:  $10 per adult; $5 per child (18 & under);  
Children under the age of 7 MUST paddle in a tandem (2-person) kayak with a responsible adult.
   
   
   
Family Bike Programs 
The number of places you can ride a bike in Rock Hill is growing! Join us for family-friendly bike rides to learn more about local greenways, bike routes and the new mountain trails at the Rock Hill Outdoor Center. Cycling is a healthy alternative to get around town and fun way stay active as a family.  In addition to exploring safe places to ride in Rock Hill, we’ll also cover proper bike size, helmet fit, basic bike maintenance, how to use gears and brakes, trail etiquette, and other bike safety topics. “Bike Rock Hill” water bottles will be provided to all participants. Pre-registration is required.  On-line registration is available at the link above.
Dates & Locations:  Stay tuned for upcoming dates.  
Time:  6 PM - 8 PM  
Cost:  $3.00 per person  
Each child must be accompanied by an adult; no more than two children per adult attending. 
Equipment:  All participants must wear a helmet. A limited number of youth bikes can be reserved on a first come, first served basis 
 
   
   
Family Climb Nights 
It’s not just for little kids! Our indoor climbing wall is a great introduction to rock climbing, no matter what your level of experience is. Rise to the challenge and stop by for an evening of fun! The Climbing Wall is open on the second Monday of each month.

Location:  Northside Recreation Center

Time:  6 PM - 8 PM  
Cost:   $2 per person climbing (if you just want to come and watch your family climb, that’s free)
