Would you know what to do in a cardiac, breathing or first aid emergency? The right answer could help you save a life. This hands-on course will help you recognize and respond appropriately to a variety of life-threating emergencies. You'll learn the skills you need to give immediate care to a suddenly ill or injured person until more advanced medical personal arrive and take over.

At the end of your course you will be able to:

  • Keep yourself safe while assisting others in an emergency
  • Demonstate how to check a person who is responsive or appears to be unresponsive for life-threating and non-life- threating conditions
  • Identify when to call 911 for assistance with a life-threating emergency
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following sudden illnesses: heart attack, choking, breathing emergencies, diabetic emergencies, seizures, fainting and stroke
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following injuries: burns; muscle bone and joint injuries; and head, neck and spinal injuries, including concussion (First Aid Courses Only)
  • Describe methods used to control external bleeding, including the application of direct pressure and the application of a commercial tourniquet (First Aid Course Only)
  • Demonstrate the application of direct pressure to control external bleeding (First Aid Courses Only)
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following environmental injuries and illness: heart-related illnesses, cold-related illnesses and poisoning (First Aid Courses Only)
  • Demonstrate CPR and use of an automates external defibrillator (AED) for a person who is in cardiac arrest (CPR/AED Courses Only)
