CCA Offers Utility Assistance to Qualifying Candidates

Carolina Community Actions, Inc. is helping low-income residents keep the cold outside this winter with the LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) program.

Beginning October 12, ten locations across York County will be accepting applications from qualified residents for heating assistance.

Clover:

Qualified applicants are eligible for up to $500, with a minimum direct assistance of $225. Qualification is based on household income and family size. Residents may apply twice in 2009 - once during the cooling-energy time, between July 1, 2009 and September 30, 2009 and again during the heating-energy season, October 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009, for a total of $1000 maximum in assistance. Residents who received assistance with heating between January and May, 2009 will not be eligible to apply for assistance during the current heating season.

To apply for the Direct Assistance LIHEAP, applicants must present the following documentation and be INCOME ELIGIBLE:

  • South Carolina picture ID with current address
  • Social security cards and numbers for all household members
  • Total household income (including day of application):
    • Monthly - last check stub or social security printout
    • Biweekly - last 2 check stubs
    • Weekly - last 4 check stubs
    • If employed for less than 1 month, a letter from your employer (on company letterhead) must be presented stating your date of employment, hourly wage, approximate hours worked per week, and date of your first paycheck
  • Zero income - if you or any household member 18 years or older have no income you must obtain:
    • Form 01 (Claimant Profile Data) and Form 07 (Benefits Payment History) from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission
    • If unemployed less than 6 months – a letter from last employer stating last date of employment, gross pay, and the date pay was received (on company letterhead)
  • If you or any household member receives any assistance from DSS (AFDC, food stamps, etc.), a 4-6 page printout is required
  • Current unpaid electric bill - must bring the complete bill.

Specific information regarding application locations and qualifications can be obtained by calling 2-1-1 or 1-866-892-9211, United Way’s information and referral hotline. 2-1-1 is a free service, available 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
