The African-American Business District Monument
  • is located at the corner of Black Street and Dave Lyle Boulevard in Downtown Rock Hill, where the historic African-American Business District was located.
  • pays tribute to the Business District that served the African-American community until its demolition in the early 1970’s.
  • recalls the storefront look of “days gone by” and features historical images and information about the Business District.
  • has become a great educational resource for the community, providing information on the contributions of the African-American Business District to Rock Hill’s history.

Fundraising efforts for the Monument were spearheaded by the African-American Cultural Resources Committee, formed in October 2012, to define the historic outline of the African-American cultural, residential, and commercial communities within the City of Rock Hill. These dedicated citizens work to collect, catalogue and preserve this rich history.  This group is now active as an Advisory Committee to the City’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
