Rock Hill, South Carolina is a business-savvy blend of historic charm and responsibly implemented expansion. The city is located in the north-central area of South Carolina approximately 20 miles south of Charlotte, NC along the I-77 corridor. Rock Hill is a growing community of nearly 75,000 residents. Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, SC and the only major South Carolina city in the Charlotte area.

Rock Hill enjoys balmy summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in summer is 87 degrees Fahrenheit while average highs in winter hover in the low 50’s.

Rock Hill earned its name in 1852, when the Charlotte/Columbia/Augusta Railroad line was being constructed through the area. Rail crews encountered a small, flinty hill and dubbed the spot “Rock Hill.” A U.S. Post Office was established during that year, marking the official beginning of the city.

The railroad brought business into the area which thrives as a result. The village was incorporated in 1892.

Rock Hill's City Hall was dedicated in 1992 and a time capsule was buried in front of the building. The time capsule is to be opened in the year 2092.

The City of Rock Hill is served by Rock Hill School District 3 and is home to three colleges and universities:

Perfectly situated on the I-77 corridor just 20 minutes south of Charlotte, NC and an hour north of Columbia, SC, Rock Hill is convenient to Raleigh, Durham and Greensboro, North Carolina and to Atlanta, Georgia.

The completion of the Interstate 485 beltway and also future planned routes make for quick and easy transportation from Rock Hill to any destination in the Charlotte Metro region. Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is 20 minutes north of Rock Hill via I-77.

For general aviation including corporate jets, the Rock Hill-York County Airport is a Gateway to the Carolinas, offering fast, efficient service and quick access to the Charlotte Metro region without the traffic headaches of flying in and out of a larger airport.

CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway provide rail freight service to York County, while Amtrak passenger service is available 25 minutes away in Charlotte. A comprehensive Light Rail system linking the entire Charlotte metro area is underway.

The Port of Charleston is a short 3-hour drive from Rock Hill via I-77 & I-26. The Port features modern terminals enjoys an excellent international reputation. More than 350 Charleston-based transportation-related companies service the shipping needs for the entire southeastern portion of the nation.

The Civitas statues are beautiful 22 foot-tall sculptures that stand at the intersection of Dave Lyle Blvd. and Gateway Blvd, and in the Rotunda of Rock Hill City Hall.

Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation commissioned Audrey Flack in 1988 to sculpt the Civitas, which is Latin for “civic pride.” The Civitas was designed as a female version of Michelangelo’s “David”, The thought behind the design relates to the similarities between the cities of Rock Hill and Florence, Italy. At the time of the commission of “David”, Florence was a city of 45,000 people whose vibrant textile industry was slowly fading and the growth of their much larger neighbor Rome was affecting Florence’s growth. Rock Hill’s size and textile history paralleled Rome’s during the creation of both statues. The Civitas reflects the spirit of Rock Hill’s textile heritage in the clothing and hair, which suggest billowing ribbons of material. That material transforms into wings representing the fact that Rock Hill’s textile history provided the texture and foundation that gave the city wings to move forward.

Each Civitas holds a different circular emblems to signify four key themes of Rock Hill.

The Gateway intersection where the four Civitas statues stand is circular to symbolize unity, teamwork and togetherness. The columns that stand beside the Civitas were a gift to the city from First Union Corporation, and are regarded as one of the area’s most treasured historical artifacts. A gift to the City from First Union Corporation, they represent Rock Hill’s commitment to preserve and enhance the history of the area.

The logo of Rock Hill was developed in December 1992, with a great deal of focus spent on the philosophy behind the design. Each arrow represents the six themes on which city’s future was built:

The six arrows work toward a central focus and draw strength from their common direction and purpose. Each arrow, or theme, is strong in its own right, but gathers more strength by meeting the others and moving together toward a common goal, depicted by the middle star. The motion of the arrows symbolizes Rock Hill’s progressive nature.
