Jury trials are requested by an individual who is charged with a crime that is tried in Municipal Court and would occur at a date later than the scheduled bench trial court date. You may request a jury trial for any charge except parking tickets. You may represent yourself or be represented by an attorney.

At trial, six people (your peers) and possibly one or two alternates, are selected to sit for the trial and listen to testimony offered by the accused, police, individuals and — in certain cases — through video tapes.

The trial judge does not make determinations of guilt or innocence at jury trials; that is solely the responsibility of the six jurors, and their decision must be unanimous.

The presiding judge makes sure that the trial is conducted in the manner required by law, charges the jurors with the responsibility of fact finding, gives them the law as is written and charges them with the duty of making the decision of guilt or innocence.

Jurors are selected by a computer program from motor vehicle and voter registration for residents living in the city limits of Rock Hill. You may be selected to serve as a juror in the Municipal Court once a year for no more than a one week term.

Jury trials are conducted 12 weeks per year. One term of jury trials will last for one full week. These weeks are selected so as not to conflict with court sessions held by courts of higher jurisdiction than the Municipal Court.

This request may also be hand delivered to the court, but must be received no later than the day prior to your bench court trial date.
